It’s not too late to squeeze in a family ski trip without trying to find flights that work and resorts that are open out west!  Although it is NOT the great Rocky Mountains, Granite Peak in Wausau, WI can give you your money’s worth of varying ski runs and fun for the whole family!  A short 3+ hours from Milwaukee and you will be transported to what is now being called, "the best midwest skiing !".  With a vertical drop of 700 ft and an elevation of 1943 ft, Granite Peak offers skiing for the beginner and the more advanced skiers in your family.  There are 6 chair lifts (one high speed lift at almost 10mph), a terrain park, a restaurant and a bar.  The food is typical ski resort fare and expensive but you are allowed, as many people do, to bring in your own picnic basket.  We saw people with gourmet spreads including their own bottles of wine!

Granite Peak at Rib Mountain state park claims to have 74 runs but I was not able to count that many.  They count the top of the hill (blacks and blues) as one run, and then the bottom (most often greens and blues) as another.

You can save some money by purchasing tickets in advance online.  You can also make reservations at the nearby water park if you have the energy to combine a ski/water park vacation.

One word of warning is to make SURE you know where you are going when choosing a run.  Sometimes the trails are not well marked and my daughter and I found ourselves at the top of a black run that we were NOT ready for.  The only way down was on our rear ends!
